Hebron is twenty miles south of Jerusalem a place of pilgrimage for Jews, Christians
and Muslims, the burial-place of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and their wives together burial-place of Joseph.
In Genesis 23, Abraham obtains the cave of Macpelah from Ephron the Hittite: “I
give you the field, and I give you the cave that is in it; in the presence of my people I give it to you; bury your dead.” Sarah was the first to be buried. Herod the Great 37-4 BC built an imposing wall about the cave.
For seven years King David made Hebron his capital.
